Notes From The Meadowlands
May 14, 2005
Pick 6 At The Meadowlands The Meadowlands' Pick 6 wager, previously offered only once a week on Wednesdays, will now be carded every racing night, beginning Wednesday, May 18. The $1 wager, which encompasses races four through nine, features a low 18 percent takeout. If there are no tickets with all six winners selected, 75 percent of the pool will be carried over to the following racing program and 25 percent distributed in consolation payouts. The average 2005 payout for six of six has been $11,951.
Powerful Duo in New Jersey Sire Stakes Owner Jeff Snyder sends out the powerful duo of Rocknroll Hanover and Village Jolt in Saturday night's opening round of the New Jersey Sire Stakes for three-year-old pacing colts. Rocknroll Hanover is the 9-5 morning line favorite in the first race and Village Jolt is rated 6-5 in the morning line in the fifth race. Snyder's third top colt, Cam's Fool, will skip the event.
"Brett--trainer Pelling--wanted to prepare him for the New Jersey Classic," said Snyder, the 2002 Owner of the Year. "He doesn't want Cam's Fool to race against those two yet. Village Jolt and Rocknroll Hanover will race in the big races this year, whether they go against each other or not. We're hoping they all do well because we like to buy Western Ideals and Cam's Card Sharks."
Rocknroll Hanover's mother, Rich N Elegant, is also the dam of stakes winners Red River Hanover and Royalflush Hanover.
Village Jolt, the divisional champion at two, had a 2004 record of six wins and two seconds from 10 starts for earnings of $918,577. His topped all other pacers with his average earnings per start of more than $91,000 and is the only colt to win the Woodrow Wilson and Breeders Crown. He prepped for his return to the races this year with three qualifiers.
Cam's Card Shark Red Hot Sire Cam's Card Shark completed a unique trifecta in 2004. He sired divisional champion in all three male categories: Village Jolt [two-year-old], Timesareachanging [three-year-old] and Four Starzzz Shark [older pacing horse]. He is the sire of seven of the 17 entrants in Saturday night's first round of New Jersey Sire Stakes. His offspring also finished one-two in the 2004 Meadowlands Pace: Holborn Hanover and Timesareachanging.
Arturo Now A Top Sire Arturo, the first son of Artsplace to top $1 million in earnings (in 1997), is now a top stallion with four of his offspring on Saturday night's program -- Basil Hanover in the third race, a division of the Graduate Elims; Art Maker in the seventh race, a $34,000 claiming race for tags of $100,000 to $125,000; Shu Hanover, who bids for his seventh straight win in the tenth race, a $47,500 open pace, and O Narutac Pat, also in the tenth race open. This year four-year-old Shu Hanover has won nine of 15 starts and paced a mile in 1:48.3, to share the season's record with Maltese Artist.
Cagey Graduate Veterans Three of this year's entrants, Mini Me, Life Source and Boulder Creek, are Graduate veterans. Mini Me was third in 2003 and fifth in 2005. Life Source was ninth in 2004, and Boulder Creek was third in the 2004 Graduate Final.
