Wearable Art Wins Berry's Creek
May 5, 2007
Wearable Art held off the late charge of The Quiet Mon to win the $225,000 Berry's Creek in a stakes record 1:50 flat on Saturday night at the Meadowlands. Driven by Ron Pierce, Wearable Art gamely fought off the 4-5 favorite to win the first major race on the stakes trail for three-year-olds. Fresh Deck held on for third.
"I kind of had The Quiet Mon right where I needed him to be," Pierce said. "I figured if I was going to beat him, that would be the way to do it. There was a little concern [about The Quiet Mon in the stretch], but the harder I [urged] Art, the harder he went. He has the license to get a lot better."
"I wasn't upset with that [:55.2 half]," added winning trainer-owner Peter Kleinhans. "Originally, I was kind of hoping The Quiet Mon would brush over us and we'd be second behind him. It just seemed like it would be a safer trip. It seemed like we'd be guaranteed to be at worst, second. This way, it was more of a slugfest, but he won it, so it was great. It was a really exciting race."
Wearable Art provided Kleinhans with the biggest win of his career. The son of Artiscape was a private purchase arranged between horse agent Anthony Altomonte and trainer Andy Stafford last July. Although he does not disclose the purchase price, Kleinhans says it is the most money he has ever paid for a horse. Confident in the colt's ability, he anted up an additional $70,000 to supplement Wearable Art to most of the major stakes this season. Among the races on the colt's dance card is the $1 million Meadowlands Pace on July 14.
"He has the Rooney coming up at Yonkers in three weeks," Kleinhans said. "He just goes to the field in between."
