Bono Bests wins Battle of Lake Erie
April 19, 2008
Bono Bests and driver Keith Kash, Jr. charged to the lead on the final turn and went on to a 1:52.2 score in the $100,000 Battle of Lake Erie on Saturday night at Northfield Park. Heavily favored Tigerama (Mark MacDonald) was second and Booze Cruzin (Sam Widger) was third.
Tigerama left for control from the rail, but encountered early pressure from Booze Cruisin who dropped into the pocket after an opening 26 seconds over the sloppy oval. Tigerama reached the half in 55.2, but Allamerican Inca (Mike Wilder) was after him from first-over with Bono Bests (Keith Kash, Jr.) riding that one's cover. Bono Bests tipped off the cover of Allamerican Inca just before the three-quarter mark, which Tigerama reached first by a whisker in 1:23.4, and once shown clear racetrack, Bono Bests surged to the lead and sprinted away to win by open lengths in 1:52.2.
Ross Croghan trains Bono Bests for owners Stephen Demeter and Herbert Burns of New York. This was the sixth win in ten starts in 2008 for Bono Bests, a five-year old Pro Bono Best gelding. Since moving into Croghan's barn, Bono Bests has won six of seven starts, including a leg of the George Morton Levy Pacing Series at Yonkers.
