The Breeders Crown Older Pace--July 31, 2004 This is the 20th year of the Crown Aged Pace, and it's been at the Meadowlands for eight years (1996-2002 & this year). 12 different tracks in total. The last three years are the three richest editions.
Art Major and McArdle last year became the first two horses to be 1-2 in the Breeders Crown at ages three and four. The 25.1 opening quarter in this race last year (Mini Me taking it over from Art Major) was the fastest ever Breeders Crown quarter.
The 1:48 mile by Western Ideal in 2000 was the fastest ever Breeders Crown mile. Four times this race has been timed under 1:49, thus, it is tied with the William Haughton for the most of any series or stake in harness history.
Life Source was third in 2002, Four Starzzz Shark third last year. They will try and become the 3rd and 4th horses to hit the board TWICE in this Crown event. Camluck won it in 1991 and was 3rd in 1992, and Red Bow Tie won it twice-1998-1999. On The Road Again fell short of $3 million career, due in large part to his being twice defeated in the Breeders Crown in two tries.
57 board spots in the Breeders Crown in this division in 19 years, taken by 55 DIFFERENT horses. (Camluck-Red Bow Tie repeated) 41 of those horses, including every one in the new millenium, has won over $1 million career.
Sire Cams Card Shark looks for his first win in this race with Four Starzzz Shark. He was second in the 2000 final--the fastest ever Crown event--with Royalflush Hanover.
This years Crown will be raced five years to the day of Red Bow Tie's 1999 win, his second straight win, on July 31, 1999.
Cam Fella has sired three winners (most of any sire), and looks for his first grandson to win it in Four Starzzz Shark. Cam Fella has to his credit: Armbro Operative-1997, Village Jiffy-1994 and Camluck 1991.
Mike Lachance looks for his fifth Aged Crown victory. Previous winners include: 1985-Division Street, 1989-Matts Scooter, 1997-Armbro Operative, 2000-Western Ideal.
Sire Abercrombie's last major stakes win? It came in the 2001 $500,000 Breeders Crown with Goliath Bayama. Abecrombie is the sports #1 money-leading sire ever!!
Artsplace and Art Major are the ONLY father son winners of this race.
