How to Read the Program
Reading the Past Performance Program is not as difficult as it may at seem at first.
Just as the rows and rows of small type you see on the financial pages of your daily
newspaper tell you the day-to-day financial health of a corporation, the past performance
lines tell you how a horse has performed in his or her last few races.
Combining the abbreviations shown below with the race lines shown for each horse, you'll
soon be able to see how each horse performed.
The information shown in most race programs is identical; there are, however, a few
minor differences, but none much different than we'll show you here:
Color of Horse
b = bay
blk = black
br = brown
ch = chestnut
gr = gray
ro = roan
Sex of the Horse
c = colt
f = filly
g = gelding
h = horse
m = mare
r = ridgling
Track Conditions
ft = fast
gd = good
hy = heavy
my = muddy
sl = slow
sy = sloppy
Racing Info
acc = accident
be = broken equipment
bl = bled
dh = deadheat
dis = distanced (25 lengths or more)
dnf = did not finish
ex = break due to broken equipment
i = suffered interference
ij = injured
im = impeded
ix = break caused by interference
nk = neck
ns = nose
o = raced outside
oo = raced three-wide
pl = placed via disqualification
pu = pulled up
TDis = time disallowed
X = broke stride
+ = moved up via disqualification
