Adios Butler

By Adios--Debby Hanover--Billy Direct
Born 1956, died 1983
Bred by Russell Carpenter of Chester, New York

As one of the most prolific sons of the mighty Adios, Adios Butler was twice named Horse of the Year, and though he only raced three seasons, earned $509,875. He won 27 of 50 career starts racing at ages two, three and four from 1958, '59, and '60.

Adios Butler  took a two-year-old record of 2:04.1 over a half-mile oval. The following season, at three, he recorded a time trial clocking of 1:55.4, which he lowered to 1:54.3 as a four-year-old in 1960. He won, among others, the Little Brown Jug and Pacing's Triple Crown.

The Adios Butler Syndicate was formed in May of 1960, and he quickly began life as a stallion. However, it is often thought by many pedigree experts in the business that Adios Butler never fully was able to prove himself as a sire, as he stood in Ohio and was bred to mostly mediocre mares, at best. Despite those odds, Adios Butler was able to produce a number of class horses.

Until his death in December of 1983, Adios Butler sired the winner's of over $15 million, from 531 starters. He sired a total of 694 foals, and of those, 72 paced in 2:00 or faster. He sired 33 $100,000 winners, ten $200,000+ winners, and four progeny who earned $300,000 or more.

His top money earner was Van Kirk, who paced to a time of 1:55 at three, with $568,274 to his credit lifetime. His second top money earner was also his fastest son, Escondido, who paced to an eight-year-old record of 1:53.2, with earnings of $427,940. Other top performers include Dean Butler, p, 5, 1:57.4Q ($308,113) and El Patron p, 4, 1:57.3 ($336,368).
