A Broodmare is a female Standardbred who may or may not have had a career as a racehorse, and who breeds (mates) with a stallion in order to produce a foal.

Often times, mares or fillies will have successful careers as racehorses before they retire to the breeding shed. Sometimes, a young filly will sustain an injury to a limb, which necessitates her being retired before her racing career ever begins. In any event, the broodmare is an extremely important component of any breeding operation, and typically lives a charmed life, grazing with her foal at her side in a grassy pasture, or romping and playing with the other broodmares.
